The Party
As a student union party at the Stockholm University, Humanisterna & Samhällsvetarna primarily, but not exclusively, represent the students of the humanities and of the social sciences at the Student Union of Stockholm University. The party, whose name roughly can be translated as ”The students of the humanities and of the social sciences”, was founded under the name ”Humanisterna” in 1994, then representing only the students of the humanities. Subsequently, as a result of the growing awareness of the similarities of the situations of the students of the two fields in regard to the resources provided to contribute to a satisfying study time, the focus of representation has been widened to the students of the social sciences. At the turn of the last decade, the party was merged with Studentinflytandepartiet, ”The party of student influence”.

Our idea

Our thoughts on student union politics starts with our perception of higher education. We hold the urge of learning as the main reason of there being students. No matter the purpose of one’s choice of education and no matter what reason, we believe that every student has expectations – and in the best of worlds, these  want is that all of these expectations are met. A university where students are satisfied and proud of their choice of education is one of the main characteristics of a good university.

For this to happen we need

• Better distributed resources within Stockholm University. In case of point the humanities and the social sciences which have been gravely underfinanced for several years.
• Students who are writing papers and degree thesis should get increased amount of support and better tutoring.
• Students have the right to a strong influence at all levels, both informal within the individual course, in more fundamental decisions that are taken by the University Board and everywhere in between.
• A better access to the library and course literature. Everyone deserves the right to an education, and that includes that we are able to fulfill our studies no matter personal or economical conditions.

Influence – How it works

At the moment, the local student influence at the university  is carried out through the two instances Studentkår (Student union) and The student Union, presented studentråd (Student council).

The Student Union could be described as the student representation towards the university. It consists of about 20 000 students of the university. As a member of various student union associations, and working towards members of the university, but also regional politicans and Stockholm city council, the union works for promoting a student perspective in political work. Furthermore, the union strives to widen the personal service and benefits offered to the union members. An example of a result of the union’s work is the mass transit student discount, eventually implemented after years of work in 2008 .

The student councils, such as the ämnesråd and fakultetsråd are parts of the work at the departements of the university, and therefore not part of the Student union. However, we encourage the participation in the student councils, and many of our members are experienced
